Dyspareunia Montreal
Dyspareunia is a condition in women characterized by recurrent
genital pain with sexual activity. Pain usually occurs with penetration
but can occur during nonpenetrative genital stimulation as well.
The pain can be superficial (at the vaginal opening) or deep inside
the vagina. Repeated pain can create a negative cycle, leading to
avoidance of sexual activity, lack of arousal, anorgasmia, and inhibited
sexual desire. Symptoms may include burning, itching, stinging,
or inflammation in any area of the perineum.
Causes of dyspareunia
• The main causes are vulvovaginitis, genital herpes, atrophic
vulvitis, urethral problems, episiotomy, radiation vaginitis, and
sexual trauma, as well as inadequate lubrication or topical irritants
such as spermicides or latex.
• Deep pelvic pain is often associated with thrusting by the
partner that hits an ovary during sexual intercourse, pelvic inflammatory
disease (PID), pelvic or abdominal surgery, postoperative adhesions,
endometriosis, genital or pelvic tumors, irritable bowel syndrome,
urinary tract infection, and ovarian cysts. Dyspareunia can also
have psychological causes.
Treatment of dyspareunia
• Considerations involve identifying and treating any physical
causes for pain. If the dyspareunia is of a psychological nature
the psychotherapy is indicated.
